Firearms Project
National Firearms Identification Database (NFID)
The NFID Project is one of five initiatives that have been mandated by the Ministerial Council for Police and Emergency Management – Police (MCPEMP) to address the deficiencies in national firearms management.
The NFID will promote a common understanding of firearms across the national borders, through the establishment of a common information model and web services. It is expected to:
- Increase the consistency of national firearms identification, enhancing jurisdiction to jurisdiction communication;
- Improve the effectiveness and efficiency of firearms related investigations;
- Enhance identification practices in importing firearms; and
- Support more consistent national firearms management.
The key outputs of NFID Project will be:
- Central NFID System (user interface and database) based on Victoria Police Weapon Identification System (WIDS) and the Licensing and Registration System (LARS) functionality and dataset, with additional fields to support a common information model;
- Web and replicated database provisioning services to meet police integration needs;
- Subject matter expert controlled Content Management Capability; and
- Reconfiguration of National Firearms Licensing and Registration System (NFLRS) to accept both the current dataset and future NFID values.
The National Firearms Identification Database System will go live in 2012.
